感謝台灣的恩人

本週四（五日）是巴克禮（Thomas Barclay, 1849-1935）牧師紀念日。蘇格蘭出生的巴克禮，一八七五年來到福爾摩沙，奉獻台灣一甲子，終老於此地。

他是報人，創辦《台灣府城教會報》，是台灣第一家報紙，一八八五年至今持續發行。他是教育家，創立「大學」（傳教師養成班）、台南神學院，也是台灣第一所中學長榮中學的興辦者之一。他是語言學家，透過白話字（台語羅馬字），翻譯並出版至今沿用的聖經，讓當時不識字民眾得以在短期內學會讀、說、寫母語，如今仍是保留母語的有效工具。他也是危機處理者，一八九五年清廷割讓台灣，當年十月日本軍隊進佔府城之際，受當地士紳懇託出面斡旋，日軍平和進城，免去了生靈塗炭。

以一位與台灣沒有利害關係的外國人，巴克禮一生所為，堪稱台灣的恩人。台灣感念有情、有義的恩人，可做的事很多。彭明敏文教基金會每年印製月曆，標有台灣恩人或貢獻者紀念日。在台南，有以巴克禮為名的道路、教會、紀念公園，每年有紀念活動。此外，我們可把像巴克禮的台灣恩人群象寫入教科書，也寫成傳記演義，以藝文表現傳為史詩篇章，並拍成電影或連續劇，或拍成「大河劇」。經由這樣的闡發演繹，包括對時代、建築、衣裳、器用及藝術考據，重現一百五十年來的台灣社會，釐清「我們是誰」、「我們從何而來」等基本認同與價值，這才是生動的歷史，這才是我們所要的文化振興。

哲學家西賽羅（Marcus Cicero）說︰「感恩不僅是最崇高的美德，也是所有美德之源。」個人如此，整體亦然。經由感念台灣恩人的過程，人們得以學習這一片土地和人民的歷史人文自然演變，認識自己、也認識台灣。一個知所感恩的國家社會，必能提升境界，創造偉大的文化與文明。
